20 million people in southern
California and northern Mexico
faced a day of
uncertainty(先行き不安) and fear(恐れ、不安):
dozens of(数十の～多数の) aftershocks
after that 7.2 magnitude
earthquake yesterday.
This big quake was along
a small fault called
the Laguna fault,
about 60 miles away from
the giant San Andreas fault
we all know.
Dr. Lucy Jones is
a California seismologist(地震学者)
for the US Geological(地質学の) Survey(調査),
and earlier today, she told me
this quake does not predict(～を予測する)
another one on the San Andreas.
Each earthquake makes
another earthquake more(～しやすい) likely(可能性が高い),
but only for a short period of time,
and only relatively(比較的) nearby.
So we're seeing lots of aftershocks,
but we don't see a special impact
on the San Andreas.
