A Source close to President Obama
described this as a sad, tragic day;
it was certainly
a day of consequence.
The Oval Office meeting between
the President and the General was
tense and short, only 30 minutes,
after which Stanley McChrystal's
command in Afghanistan
came to an abrupt
and inglorious end.
It started with
those disparaging remarks
McChrystal and his aides
made about
the President and key members of
his national security team
in Rolling Stone magazine.
The conduct represented
in the recently published article
does not meet the standard
that should be set
by a commanding general.
In some ways, General McChrystal
made it easy for the President.
He didn't put up much of a fight,
as one official told me,
"The General knew what was
coming and he took it like a man."
