President Obama today
announced major changes
in America's nuclear strategy(戦略)
and overhaul(見直し（する）)
that would scale back the role(役目、役割、)
of nuclear weapons
in US defense plans.
We are reducing(減る、縮小するreduce) the role and
number of weapons in our arsenal(貯蔵武器、武器庫)
while maintaining (保持［維持]する)a safe, secure
and effective deterrent
to protect our nation, allies(同盟国)
and partners.
The most controversial(物議を醸す) part
of what's called
the Nuclear Posture(位置、姿勢、態度) Review(再検討、復習):
the pledge(誓約、約束) to not use
nuclear weapons against
any country that has signed
and is abiding by(〔規則〕に従う、順守する)
the Nuclear Non-Proliferation(拡散、増殖)
Treaty(条約、協定).
In a statement(声明),
Republican Senators John McCain
and Jon Kyl expressed concern(懸念、心配)s
that the Obama Administration(政権、陣営)
must clarify(明確にする、はっきりさせる)
that we will take no option(選択、選ぶこと)
off the table(提案されていない)
to deter(抑止する、阻止する) attacks against
the American people and our allies.
