It hasn't happened since 9/11:
flights grounded across the globe.
But today,
the cause of all this chaos
wasn't a terrorist strike,
but an act of God.
A massive volcanic eruption
in Iceland has created
a thick cloud of dust,
ash and glass（珪砂[けいしゃ]）
that's been spreading
over Europe all day
making flying there impossible.
Dozens of airports
have been closed
disrupting thousands of flights,
many of them in this country.
Hundreds of thousands of
travelers are stranded（立ち往生する）tonight.
So we begin at the hardest-hit
airport, Heathrow in London,
with Nick Watt.
Well, the sound of
aircraft overhead,
that ever-present（絶えず存在する）
background noise to modern life,
tonight it's missing.
At Heathrow from above, silence.
And as you said,
all caused by an act of God.
世界中で欠航が相次いだのは
9.11の事件以来。
だが今回の原因は
