04/19/10 アイスランドの火山活動
Only a day earlier,
we drove through zero visibility
down this same road
under heavy falling ash.
Today, the skies are clear,
but the ash which has been
pumping out of the volcano
at an astonishing
750 tons per second
is everywhere.
Rain has turned it into
a thick cement-like paste
that covers everything.
But, will it get worse?
If anyone has the answer,
it's this man:
he is an Icelandic geophysicist,
who spoke with us
after meeting with
some of the nation's top leaders.
How long will this last?
It's very difficult to tell.
I would be surprised
if it kept on at the same level
one week from now,
but easily for the next few days.
昨日 この道路を通ったときは
火山灰で視界ゼロだった。
今日は晴 れているが―
毎秒750トンの勢いで噴出した
大量の火山灰がいたる所に積もる。
火 山灰は雨でセメント状になり
あらゆる物を覆った。
状況を予測できる人が
いるとすれば―
こ のアイスランドの
地球物理学者だろう。
“い つまで続く”と
断言はできませんが―
現状が1週間も続くことは
ないでしょう。
数日なら十分ありえます。
