The Governor of Virginia has
created an eruption(噴火、発生、発疹) of a debate(討論、論争).
He decided to declare(宣言する) this month
Confederate(南部連合支持者､共犯者､連合国) History Month,
raising an argument about
two questions:
should the Confederacy
be honored
and what if the proclamation(宣言、声明)
never mention(述べる、触れる、口にする)s
one of the central(中心となる、重要な) reasons
the South went to war.
Former(前の、前者、かつての) Virginia Governor
Doug Wilder,
the first black governor in the US
since Reconstruction(南北戦争後の南部の合衆国への再統合期、再建、復興),
says the failure(不足、失敗、不成功) to mention
slavery is mind(信じられない、)-boggling(あぜんとする、気が遠くなる).
This was a civil war.
And slavery was the controlling
and central issue.
Late today, Governor McDonnell
changed course,
saying the failure to mention
slavery was a mistake.
Confederate sacrifice(犠牲) is part of
Virginia history, but so is slavery.
And the two are impossible
to separate.
